How I Beat Phone Distractions While Studying for My H.S.E. / GED at Home

If you’re studying for your H.S.E. / GED at home, I’m almost positive you’ve realized by now that distractions are everywhere. TV in the background, family talking, pets running around, kids needing attention, food calling your name from the kitchen, and one of the biggest distractions of all… your phone.

Trust me, I understand this one personally.

I’ll paint the picture for you because this happened to me countless times while I was studying. My phone would stay quiet almost the entire day. No calls. No texts. Nothing. Then the exact moment I finally sat down to study, opened my laptop, pulled up a lesson, and started getting locked in… BOOM. My phone starts ringing. Text messages going off back to back. Notifications popping up everywhere.

Whether it was my cousin, my mom, a friend, or somebody just checking in, it felt rude not to answer. But at the same time, it completely threw me off my game. The focus I worked hard to build disappeared in seconds, and then the bad mindset would start rolling in.

“Man, I can’t focus.”

“This is frustrating.”

“I’ll study later.”

Then later turns into tomorrow, and tomorrow turns into next week.

I get it.

That’s one reason I built Have Faith Prep — to help people understand they are not alone in this process. Sometimes the problem isn’t intelligence. Sometimes it’s distractions, frustration, and mindset. I want to share ideas that helped me so you can stay focused and keep moving forward instead of giving up.

So here’s exactly how I started beating this problem.

Step 1: Communication

The first thing I learned was communication matters.

After calming down from being frustrated, I realized people were not trying to ruin my study time. They just didn’t know I had scheduled time set aside for studying.

So I started telling people ahead of time:

“From this time to this time, my phone is going on Do Not Disturb because I’m studying.”

You know what surprised me?

Most people were very understanding.

A lot of them actually respected the fact that I was trying to better myself and finish what I started.

The good news is most phones now come with a “Do Not Disturb” mode, and you can even schedule it to automatically turn itself on every day during your study hours. That small change alone helped me a lot because it removed the constant sound interruptions that were breaking my concentration.

Step 2: Flip Your Phone Over

Now here’s the second problem I ran into.

Even with the sound off, my phone screen would still light up every time I got a notification. And the second you see that screen light up, your brain naturally gets curious.

You start wondering:

“Who texted me?”

“What if it’s important?”

“I’ll just check it real quick.”

Don’t do that.

That “real quick” check turns into losing focus on the lesson.

One response leads to another response. Then your mind is no longer fully focused on studying because now part of your attention is waiting for the next notification.

So this became my solution:

I flipped my phone face down while I studied.

Out of sight, out of mind.

That one habit made a huge difference for me because it stopped me from starting the distraction cycle in the first place.

You Don’t Need 10 Hours a Day

A lot of people think they need to study all day long to pass. That’s not true.

If you lock in for just ONE focused hour a day with no distractions, you can make serious progress over time. Repetition wins. Consistency wins.

And if you don’t understand the lesson the first time, don’t instantly get discouraged.

Tell yourself:

“I WILL get this.”

“I will not let this beat me.”

Then restart the lesson if you need to.

Yes, it can feel frustrating. Yes, sometimes it sucks. But you CAN learn it if you stay patient and keep showing up.

Remember, passing your H.S.E. / GED is not about being perfect. It’s about refusing to quit.

If this blog helped you, please share it with someone else studying for their H.S.E. / GED journey. You never know who might need the encouragement today.
